How to Make Spaghetti Sauce With Tomato Paste
Making spaghetti sauce with tomato paste is a delicious and inexpensive way to have homemade spaghetti sauce any time you need it! This recipe uses simple ingredients you likely already have making this perfect for a meal you can prepare with out much pre-planning.
Using Tomato Paste For Spaghetti Sauce
Using tomato paste not only makes this spaghetti sauce really inexpensive but it saves space in your pantry! The small size of the tomato paste is great for when you’re tight on space but still want to enjoy a delicious homemade pasta sauce.
Additionally, the flavor that tomato paste brings to spaghetti is amazing because it’s highly concentrated! Making your own spaghetti sauce also makes it easy to achieve your desired flavor.
The Other Ingredients In Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
The other ingredients in this spaghetti sauce are simply some finely diced onion (or onion powder), garlic powder, dried basil, dried oregano, thyme, parsley, salt, pepper and water. While these items are simple, they complement and enhance the delicious tomato flavor of the tomato paste.
Since this recipe calls for dried herbs, it’s easy to keep all of the ingredients on hand to make a delicious pasta any time. If you prefer to use some fresh ingredients like garlic and onion, I recommend chopping both ingredients very small, sauteing and then blending together with the tomato paste. This ensures a smooth texture and an even flavor with every bite of sauce!
The Shelf Life of Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
As with many homemade foods, the shelf life is quite short. When making this sauce, it’s recommended to enjoy it within 3-5 days of preparing. If you need it to last longer, I suggest freezing it.

Storing Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
How you store homemade spaghetti sauce will depend on how soon you will be using your delicious sauce. If you’re storing homemade spaghetti sauce for the short term (3-5 days), you can keep it in an air tight food storage container in the fridge.
For longer term storage, I recommend freezing. Choose a freezer safe food storage container like a plastic deli container, ziploc bag or freezer safe glass container and place in the freezer. If kept frozen in a deep freezer, this sauce will last 6-12 months!
To use, take out the container of sauce and let thaw in the fridge overnight. Use as desired.
Recipe Substitutions & Alterations
As with any recipe, there are definitely changes that can be made depending on your taste preferences.
If you absolutely despise basil or oregano, feel free to leave them out of your spice mix.
For a spicier spaghetti sauce, you can definitely add some red pepper flakes or other hot pepper seasonings.
If you prefer a spaghetti sauce that has a bit of sweetness to it, feel free to add a sweetener of your choice to make this recipe a bit less acidic.
