French Onion Dip – Quick and Easy Recipe with Greek Yogurt
This french onion dip is a great dip to make when you need something to bring to a party or for a dipping sauce to enjoy as a snack. Even when using dried herbs, this dip provides a bright and fresh flavor to any application.
The Ingredients In French Onion Dip
The base of this dip is greek yogurt and homemade mayonnaise. Using greek yogurt as the base allows this dip to have the similar texture as sour cream with extra protein and healthy probiotics. Adding some homemade mayonnaise also contributes to a smooth and creamy texture. Mayonnaise also helps all the ingredients to bind together for a consistent flavor in every bite!
The rest of the recipe consists of herbs and seasonings including parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, dried chopped onion and sea salt. While you can use fresh options, this recipe calls to use dried ingredients. This allows you to keep all the ingredients on hand so you can make this delicious recipe at a moment’s notice. Using dried ingredients also allows you to make the mix in bulk and scoop some out when you need it.
Serving French Onion Dip
Most commonly, French onion dip accompanies a veggie tray but will also go well with chips, crackers, pretzels or bread.
For vegetables, the classic veggie tray options include broccoli, carrots, celery, peppers and cucumber. Any combination of these or other veggies will surely be enjoyed wherever you’re taking this dip.
Other Ways To Use French Onion Dip
While French onion dip is typically used with hors d’oeuvres, it can also be used for other applications like a sauce for dipping crispy potatoes or chicken kabobs at a barbeque.
Adding a bit of milk to this dip can thin it out. Having a thinner consistency will allow this to be used as a salad dressing or as a chicken marinade!
The Shelflife Of Homemade French Onion Dip
Since homemade French onion dip doesn’t have any preservatives like the store bought versions, it has a much shorter shelf life than what you might be used to. After preparing, I suggest consuming all of this dip within a week or so.
When not actively eating this dip, I recommend storing it in an airtight container in the back of your fridge to keep it extra cold.
If you want to make this dip “in bulk” to enjoy later, I suggest freezing it to extend the shelf life. If you freeze this dip, the texture might change a bit. However, it shouldn’t be anything drastic that can’t be remedied by a good mix in a bowl.
Ingredients and Tools
½ cup Greek yogurt – I like to use my Homemade Raw Milk Yogurt
½ cup Mayonnaise – This Homemade version is a family favorite!
2 cups diced onion (red, yellow or white onion)
½ tsp Worcestershire Sauce
½ TBSP freshly minced garlic (or 1 tsp Garlic Powder)
2 tsp Onion Powder
2 ½ tsp Dried Parsley
¼ tsp Salt – I like to use Redmond Real Salt for the extra minerals
2 Pinches of black pepper
Measuring Cups and Spoons
Small whisk or spoon
Medium Bowl
Glass storage container with an airtight lid
Directions
Preheat a cast iron or stainless steel skillet on medium heat with your oil of choice.
Dice onions into pieces no bigger than a half inch square.
When the skillet is preheated, add the onions and reduce the heat to medium low to caramelize. Gently sauté the onions until translucent and light brown. Be sure to stir the onions occasionally. See post for a reference picture for the light brown color.
When the onions are caramelized, add in the garlic and cook until fragrant. After the garlic has become fragrant, remove from the heat and cool for 5-10 minutes.
Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl until everything is well incorporated.
Transfer to an airtight container and place in the refrigerator to let the flavors marinate for at least an hour.
Serve with any arrangement of vegetables, crackers or chips.
