20 Amazing Tools You Need In Your Homestead Kitchen

Cooking at home is a major part of self sufficiency. As a result, it is naturally part of a homestead life. With cooking at home, it’s essential to have good tools to efficiently cook meals. These are 20 amazing tools that you need in your homestead kitchen.

Over the years of working in the kitchen, I have determined some items to be essential in the way I prefer to prepare meals. Some I purchased immediately when my husband and I moved into our first place. Others I slowly accumulated based on need or to upgrade for a better, longer lasting, quality.

These are all items that get used (almost) every day and would be repurchased in a heartbeat if they weren’t in my kitchen.

Wooden tools of a Homestead Kitchen

1. Wooden utensils – wooden spoons & wooden turners. These get used in almost every meal.

2. Wooden cutting boards – I absolutely love the aesthetic of woodcutting boards but these are also superior for maintaining sharp knives.

The Metal tools of a Homestead Kitchen

3. Good knives – When you cook from scratch at home, you chop, slice and dice something at every meal. Having knives that withstand all that use is essential.

4. Stainless steel cookware – I’m so happy I don’t have to worry about not using metal utensils on my cookware to prevent a coating chipping into my family’s food.

5. Measuring spoons – Since homestead kitchens to a great deal of cooking and baking, these are great to have for spices and many baking ingredients.

6. Metal mixing bowls – being a lighter weight and more durable option to glass, they’re perfect for bringing to family dinners or parties.

7. Metal turners – I enjoy using these for preparing and serving meals.

8. Chainmail scrubber -Not only do I use this on my cast iron pans, but also on my stainless steel plans! It makes almost ANY suck on food disappear in seconds with little effort.

9. Cast Iron cookware – cast iron pans hold even heat and make the best crispy potatoes. Our household maintains four skillets, two pizza pans and two Dutch ovens on a relatively regular basis.

10. Metal tongs – From grilling to surfing, these are a multi use tool worth keeping !

11. Peelers – for carrots, potatoes and so much more! A peeler helps in preparing foods the way my family likes to eat them!

12. Dry measuring cups – In my kitchen, these get heavy use with flour and sugar for baking.

The Glass tools of a Homestead Kitchen

13. Canning jars – I use jars for almost EVERYTHING. Storing dry goods, left overs, fermenting, and snacks on the go. Oh, and of course, canning

Quart and Pint jars

14. Glass baking dishes (9×13 glass baking dishes) – these are very convenient for baking various bread products, casseroles, roasting potatoes, dinner party dishes and more!

15. Glass food storage containers – In my experience, glass storage containers are more durable than their plastic cousins. My favorite part is that they can go directly in the oven from the fridge or freezer. If you reheat food in them via the oven, be sure to put a cold container into a cold oven. If you place a cold container in a hot oven, it is likely your glass will break.

16. Glass mixing bowls – These are a sturdy and durable option for mixing, storage and preparing food that is also stain and odor resistant with little additional care.

17. Liquid measuring cups – Although I don’t always precisely measure everything, I do enjoy using more exact measurements in baking and cooking new recipes.

Other Materials

18. Trivets/hot pads/oven mitts – when baking and serving meals from the oven, it’s essential to protect your hands, countertops and tables from the hot dishes.

19. Water filter – I was shocked to see the full report of what our city water contained at our first apartment. Since then, no matter where we’ve ended up, I make sure we have filters on hand to have clean drinking and cooking water.

20. Silicone scrapers – these do an amazing job in helping me get the last drop of anything out of a jar, bowl or measuring cup. All homestead kitchens can greatly benefit from this tool.
